Yarn Count Systems – A Quick Reference Guide

Yarn count defines the thickness or fineness of a yarn, directly affecting fabric weight, strength, and hand feel. There are four main systems used globally.

1. Metric Count (Nm) – Fixed Weight

  • Definition: meters of yarn per 1 gram

  • Rule: Higher Nm = finer yarn

  • Use: Wool & fancy yarns

2. English Cotton Count (Ne) – Fixed Weight

  • Definition: number of 840-yard hanks per 1 lb

  • Rule: Higher Ne = finer yarn

  • Use: Cotton & cotton blends

3. Denier (D) – Fixed Length

  • Definition: grams per 9,000 meters

  • Rule: Higher D = thicker yarn

  • Use: Synthetic fibers & silk

4. Tex – Fixed Length

  • Definition: grams per 1,000 meters

  • Rule: Higher Tex = thicker yarn
